Pools are all the rage; Tom O'Connor on designing one that fits the land
The spring 2024 issue of Distinctive Homes looked at how the pool has become the centerpiece of outdoor living, and why it is the source of so much new thinking about how a yard gets used. Writer Lucy Probert spoke with Tom O'Connor, owner of O'Connor Design Build, about getting the design right before anything else: how the pool sits in the topography, how much shade it gets, how water moves across the property, and what you see from the house.

The piece takes in the plunge pool — roughly 10 by 15 feet, 4 to 7 feet deep, with seats built into the sides, heated or not — for people who want more than a hot tub but don't have the room for a full pool. And it features a 40-foot pool of ours in South Kingstown with the opposite problem: a blank canvas with plenty of space, where the owners wanted to keep as much green as they could. Working with Keene Architecture, we set the pool in lawn with a wide bluestone edge and framed it in limelight hydrangea.
